Cricket South Africa established the T20 Global League franchise in 2017. The inaugural season was delayed for a year due to the lack of a broadcast deal and title sponsor, and was replaced in June 2018 by the Mzansi Super League, a six-team league owned by CSA.

The MSL only ran for two seasons, with the 2020 and 2021 editions being canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

SA20 was formed in 2022 by CSA through a newly formed company, Africa Cricket Developmt (Pty) Limited (ACD). CSA is the majority shareholder of ACD with a 50% stake, while broadcaster SuperSport has a 30% stake and former Indian Premier League (IPL) Chief Operating Officer Sundar Raman the remaining 20%.

Each team will receive a 17-player roster and have the option to sign up to five players for the auction: three international players; a South African international; and an uncapped South African player.
