Saudi Arabia is gearing up to launch its own version of the T20 cricket league touted as the ‘richest in the world’, which could pose a serious threat to the Indian Premier League (IPL). Apparently, Saudi Arabia is eyeing IPL owners and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the job. After investing heavily in other sports like football and Formula 1, Saudi Arabia is now focusing on investing in cricket, The Age said.
Discussions have been going on for about a year, but the league needs to be approved by the International Cricket Council (ICC) before anything major can happen. ICC president Greg Barclay has confirmed Saudi Arabia’s interest in cricket, saying “cricket will do well for Saudi Arabia” as it moves forward with the sport more generally.

“If you look at the other sports they were involved in, I think cricket is something they would love,” he said. “Given their progress in the game, cricket will do well for Saudi Arabia
Barclay added, “They have a strong interest in investing in sports and given their regional presence, cricket seems to be a very obvious choice.”

Representatives of the Saudi government and businessmen have been seen around Indian cricket operations, demanding IPL owners and the BCCI participate in their proposed Twenty20 league, which would rival the IPL in terms of financial strength.
Currently, the BCCI prohibits Indian players from participating in overseas leagues, but a proposal from Saudi Arabia to set up a new T20 league there could change the Indian board’s stance on the matter. The plans also include the possibility of hosting the annual Asia Cup, the inaugural match or a round of the IPL in Saudi Arabia.
