Known as the Hurricane of Haryana, Kapil was a great inspiration to many aspiring Indian cricketers when India shocked the two-time World Champion West Indies for their inaugural title in 1983. Kapil played a key role in the landmark event while leading the team, both with bat and ball. .
Gavaskar reminisces how Kapil managed to get India out of dire situations with bat and ball and was also one of the best outfield players in the Indian team.
“He can win games with bat and ball. He will take the wickets and win the game for you. He’ll score a hundred or an 80-90 quickfire and turn things around. He was impressed by the bat. He was impressed with the ball. Let’s not forget all the catches he took. So he is a complete cricketer,” added Gavaskar.

During his time as captain of the Indian team, Dhoni was praised for his ability to remain calm under pressure. Gavaskar highlights how similar the traits are between Dhoni and Kapil.
“The two (Dhoni and Kapil) are very, very similar. Both have a similar approach to the game. They love to play games. They both love to be in the middle and want to achieve great things for their team. In that way, the two are very similar,” said Gavaskar.
Before hanging up his boots in 1994, Kapil represented India in 131 Tests and 225 ODIs – where he scored 5248 and 3783 runs in Tests and ODIs respectively and also took 434 and 253 wickets in the two formats.
