Karim, who played 34 ODIs, was part of the Kenyan team in three ICC World Cups in 1996, 1999 and 2003. He was the captain of the team in 1999.
This Team From Kenya Has One Of The Best Cricket Team Kit I Have Ever Set My Eyes On.
Asif Karim “loves” visiting India in Kutch. This time he is here to support and promote a sports movie in Malayalam called Madappalli United. “Children do not have a playground because of land grabbing by businessmen and politicians. It’s a global problem,” said Karim, who heads the Kenya International Sports Film Festival.
Karim, 58, represents the lost glory of cricket in Kenya. “People love to play in Kenya, against Kenyans. He likes the Kenyan style of cricket. No one opposed us. We are only our own enemies. We abandoned ourselves. This is a harsh reality. I will not look for someone else as a scapegoat. This is very clear. I was 17 years old when I played for the country in 1980 and played for 23 years. I can see the journey to where we are today. The fault lies with us. Sorry about that, but that’s the way it is.”
Karim, who played 34 ODIs, was part of the Kenyan team in three ICC World Cups in 1996, 1999 and 2003. He captained the team in 1999. A glorious year for it is Kenya. “We got the ODI status and automatically qualified for the World Cup. Played in the semi-finals of the World Cup (in 2003). We fell on that stage. Today, Kenya plays in Division 3 of the ICC and is promoted to Division 4. I said a few years ago that I would not be surprised if we became an associate team. Painful. We will return to play Uganda and Tanzania,” said Karim in New Delhi on Friday.
He vividly remembers the win against West Indies in 1996. “It was the first World Cup and we got a lot of support from the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and players like Sandeep Patil, Karsan Ghavri, Chandu Pandit. We prepared well for the 1996 World Cup and played the next two matches. After a few games we felt we weren’t far off. You see these (big) actors on TV, in magazines, on billboards and you’re confused, scared. We had a very talented team. It was a good mix and we had a feeling of confidence. We were competing. It took us a day to realize that West Indies had won (in Pune). The management deserves a lot of credit. It was a step that went well. We grew and grew. “
Aasif Karim Reflects On The Lost Glory Of Cricket In Kenya
In 2003, Karim, the legendary left-arm batsman, came out of retirement at the World Cup in South Africa. “The team needed serious people. We were a young nation in cricket and education. But then India and West Indies also took time to compete until 1971 and then the World Cup in 1983. Same with Sri Lanka. I think we belong in the big league,” said Karim, who bagged the man of the match award against Australia in Durban with 8.2-6-7-3. Among his victims were Ricky Ponting and Darren Lehmann.
He laments the decline of Kenya. “We have not planned a strong development system. Where do crickets come from? Not from the street. Success is that where there is honey, there will be honey. Absentee people started taking advantage of the glory of Kenyan cricket. We felt it during the World Cup. There were people who had no business there. Our domestic cricket has declined. The three pillars of players, management and infrastructure have collapsed”.
Karim’s best year was when Kenya attracted players from India. “The league in Nairobi was very popular among Indians. Nairobi has the best weather in June-July when the weather is hot in India. It was a perfect playing time for cricketers before September. Indians contributed a lot. But now the Indian community is not much interested in cricket, the people are active. Unfortunately, there is no system. People who make games in Kenya are not good at it. We have to admit that we have to start from scratch now. We want to identify a group of people who can take the game and take it to the next level. The last election was a joke. There should be a paradigm shift. First, arrange things and then expect money.
Karim is also a respected referee and umpire in Nairobi who led Kenya to the Davis Cup. “I would love to see a Kenyan playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) one day. The IPL has changed the pace of the game with new bowling tactics and strokes. The interest in cricket in India is unprecedented. If any professional cricketer has not toured India, his career is incomplete.
