Apparently, the Vine Kumar-led team was knocked out in the first match. But they buckled under the pressure and lost their first Premiership match in three years. The defeat ended their 35-match unbeaten streak and exited the tournament as strong favourites.
But watch out for you! They want their moment in the game. Maharashtra were reduced to 123-8 in their first innings, but they were off the hook and allowed the opposition to score 212 runs. Karnataka’s illustrious batting lineup managed to overhaul the middle score, giving the hosts a 32-run lead. But it’s not over for the audience. They fought back with Vinay Kumar’s 4/71 and stayed in the game.
Maharashtra scored 260 runs and set a target of 293 runs for the visitors. But apart from Robin Uthappa (61) and CM Gautam (65*), Karnataka succumbed to the pressure, losing by 53 runs in the process. Adding insult to Karnataka’s woes was the fact that Maharashtra won with only three decent batsmen on a monsterless pitch.

Well this was a game where Karnataka overcame Maharashtra’s poor form throughout the season. Unfortunately, they fell. This season remains the only instance of Karnataka failing to reach the final since the introduction of the new format in the late 2000s.
Karnataka and their traditional rivals Tamil Nadu met in Vizag in the quarter-finals of the prestigious Ranji Trophy in 2016-17. Large guns were mounted on either side, which made the muzzle prone. It’s a shame the game wasn’t televised.

Later, Tamil Nadu got there thanks to Dinesh Karthik’s 41 runs. Favorites to win the title, Karnataka lost by seven runs in the sixth innings. The defeat came as a rude shock to the Karnataka fans. The team played some scintillating cricket and made it to the playoffs after breaking a sweat at the league level. But despite securing the services of their international stars against all odds, a poor session ended their campaign at the knockout stage.
Karnataka swept every opponent in the Ranji Trophy 2017-18 league stage and topped the points table to reach the quarter-finals and semi-finals against Mumbai. They were seen as one of the best teams in the tournament and were on their way to winning their ninth title until they locked horns with eventual champions Vidarbha.
The highlight of the season was the match against Vidarbha at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Batting first, Vidarbha struggled against Karnataka’s four-seam attack and managed just 185 runs. With him (5/45) Mithun was in charge of spoiling the former champions.
Karnataka responded in the form of Karun Nair’s 153 and CM Gautam’s 73. They eventually scored 301, scoring 116 in a healthy first innings. A bowling performance like the first innings will seal the deal for them. But former Karnataka player Ganesh Sathish became their victim in the second innings. His industrious 81 dragged Vidarbha to a respectable 313, setting a target of 198 for the opposition.

Mayank in his life; Karun Nair and Karnataka will be hoping to proceed without any worries between the runs. But Rajneesh Gurbani had other ideas. He did not give up and continued to probe them as Karnataka performed hara-kiri in the fourth innings and found themselves in a desperate situation at 104/7.
Captain Vinay (36) along with Shreyas Gopal (24*) made some repairs and got them back. After Vinay’s departure, Mithun took an impressive 33 off 26 balls to take his team within striking distance. But he bowled a single hit and scored just nine runs. As a result, the last two wickets of Shreyas and Arvind at crucial times yielded one run off the last ball and allowed Arvind to steamroll Gurbani in the next over.
It only took one ball to push the edge of Aravinda’s bat as Karnataka lost the game by just five runs, luckily. It was their first clear defeat against Vidarbha. Gurbani proved to be Karnataka’s thorn in the flesh with his superb career-best spell (7/68). Clearly this defeat came out of nowhere and it took Karnataka players and fans a long time to accept it. This is perhaps the biggest defeat since the 2010 Ranji Trophy final defeat.
The semi-final between Karnataka and Saurashtra played in Bengaluru was a controversial game, with some questionable decisions paving the way for the use of DRS in the Ranji Trophy the following year. Thus, the game can be considered a watershed moment in the history of Indian domestic cricket.
