NEW DELHI: Harmanpreet Kaur will lead Team India in the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup in February, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Wednesday. The All India Women’s Selection Committee has selected a strong 15-member squad that will have Smriti Mandhana as Harmanpreet’s stand-in in the ICC competition.
Along with the T20 squad for the World Cup, the board also announced the squad for the tri-series in South Africa which will be held before the cricket extravaganza.
Veteran pacer Shikha Pandey has also been named in the squad for the tournament. Shikha last played for India in October 2021 before being controversially dropped from the team. The 33-year-old, whose power swings the ball, has featured in three Tests, 55 ODIs and 56 T20s.
Jemimah Rodrigues managed to retain her place in the team despite poor returns in India’s 1-4 series defeat against powerhouse Australia.

Left-arm spinner Anjali Sarvani is also part of the squad after her debut series against Australia. Other bowling options are Renuka Thakur and Pooja Vastrakar, whose inclusion in the squad depends on fitness.
The spinners in the team are all-rounders Deepti Sharma and Devika Vaidya, apart from Radha Yadav and Rajeshwari Gayakwad.
India are in Group 2 along with Pakistan, England, West Indies, Pakistan and Ireland. The two best teams from the two groups will play in the semi-finals. The final will be held on 26 February 2023 in Cape Town.
India will open their tri-series campaign against hosts South Africa on January 19 before taking on the West Indies on January 23. All teams play each other twice before the final on February 2.

With barely two weeks left for the start of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the BCCI has finally announced the squad for the Indian women’s cricket team that will be heading to the UK for the first time to compete in the Games.
The Women’s T20 International format will make its debut at the Commonwealth Games and India have been placed in Group A along with Australia, Barbados and Pakistan, making it quite a challenging affair. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka, England, New Zealand and South Africa are in Group B.

India’s women’s team will be led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and the squad will have a total of 15 members with 3 stand-in players as India prepares to hunt for Commonwealth Games cricket medals for the first time.
Wicketkeeper Taniya Bhatia, who has an unimpressive strike rate of under 100 in the T20 format, was on Monday named in the Indian women’s squad for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, while seamer Richa Ghosh was placed on the standby list.
The most notable player to return to the national team is all-rounder Sneh Rana, who did not play in the Sri Lanka series due to an injury that kept her at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for rehabilitation.

The team led by Harmanpreet kaur will name goalkeeper Yastika Bhatia as the top pick. Tania’s selection came as a surprise as the Neetu David-led selection committee brought back the keeper-batsman, who scored 166 runs in 22 innings at an average of 9.72 with a strike rate of 94.
The victim was Bengal’s Richa Ghosh, who scored 191 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 112 plus but is now on the reserve list as she has fallen off the radar of late.
Veteran Poonam Yadav, who is no longer sure of the squad, is also on the standby list along with seamer Simran Dil Bahadur. The three pacers on the list are Meghna Singh, Renuka Thakur and Pooja Vastrakar.
India will play Australia on July 29, followed by matches against Pakistan on July 31 and Barbados (August 3). The top two teams from their respective groups advance to the semi-finals. A keen sportswoman, Diana Edulji dabbled in basketball and table tennis before settling on cricket, settling in as a slow left-handed orthodox bowler. Women’s cricket was in its infancy in the country when Edulji came there and she soon became the captain and went on to lead the Indian team to the team’s debut appearance in the 1978 Women’s World Cup.
Currently, the Arjuna awardee from Mumbai is part of the BCCI administrative panel and continues to be associated with the game she loves. She was appointed to the panel by the Supreme Court in 2017.
Another legend of the game, Shantha Rangaswamy was an able captain who took over from Edulji for a while and led the Indian team during the 1982 World Cup. Tamil Nadu’s right-handed batsman Rangaswamy has become the first recipient of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s lifetime achievement award for women.
Also an Arjuna awardee, Rangaswamy is still in touch with the sport and has become a cricket writer. In addition, Rangaswamy is also the managing director of Canara Bank in Bangalore.

Pramila Bhatt, who led the Indian team in the 1997 World Cup, led the team to their first World Cup semi-final. An all-rounder, Bhatt is remembered for his one-match ODI against New Zealand during the ’97 World Cup.

Bhatt currently lives in Abu Dhabi with his wife Sarangan Venugopalan and has two children. He works as a senior manager in a talent acquisition company.
Anju Jain made sure to continue the legacy of the Indian women’s team when she took over from Bhatt as captain in the 2000 Women’s World Cup as India also reached the semi-finals in this edition.
