‘If you ask me, the pressure is on Ravi Bai’: Former cricketer on Shastri to replace Dravid as India coach

Former India cricketer Ritendra Singh Sodhi believes Shastri will continue as the team’s coach if the U20 World Cup is won in the UAE.

Ravi Shastri’s tenure as the team’s coach will come to an end in the upcoming T20 World Cup, which will be held in the United Arab Emirates. Since Rahul Dravid is the coach of the Indian team on the tour to Sri Lanka, there is talk of whether he could become the head coach of India after the end of Shastri’s tenure.
Under the guidance of Ravi Shastri, the Indian cricket team has reached a new peak. They have beaten Australia twice in their own backyard and even reached the final of the World Test Championship. However, the duo of Shastri and Kohli are yet to lift the ICC trophy.
Meanwhile, former India cricketer Ritinder Singh Sodhi is of the opinion that Shastri will continue as the team’s coach if the UAE wins the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Rules Changed Midway But We Overcame Every Hurdle: Ravi Shastri Says Team India Deserve No. 1 Ranking
“This is speculation for sure. It would be wrong to say that Ravi Shastri has not played well. He has done very well but if the parameter is to win the cup, we have to do it. But if the Indian team has won the T20 World Cup, So it will not be impossible to remove Ravi Shastri,” said Sodhi while talking to The Hindu News.
“He has already done a good job and won trophies, what are we waiting for, I think the goal will be achieved. But at the end of the day, the way Rahul Bhai went to Sri Lanka as a coach and the board refused .If you ask me, the pressure is on Ravi Bai,” he said.
Shastri is currently traveling to England with the Indian team for the upcoming 5-Test series against the host nation, starting on August 4 in Southampton. The team are due to meet in Durham on July 12 after a three-week break following last month’s WTC final in Southampton.

From Lakh to Millions: How Indian Cricket Coach’s Salary Has Seen a Massive Rise in Recent Years
It is believed that in cricket the role of the coach is more limited than in football. However, when it comes to salary, the compensation received by Indian coaches is slightly less.
First, some background. The salary of Indian coaches has always been a matter of curiosity, and more so after recent developments involving Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid as the coaches of India’s senior and under-19 teams respectively. Shastri returned as coach in July under controversial circumstances following the departure of Anil Kumble, who said his relationship with Virat Kohli was strained. Dravid was in the news when he refused to accept a bonus of Rs 50 lakh after the Under-19 team won the World Cup. He felt that all team members – players and support staff – should receive the same amount. The Indian Cricket Board accepted his proposal and paid Rs 25 lakh to all the team members.

Now about the salaries. According to the BCCI website, Shastri was paid a little over Rs 1.5 crore (Rs 1,57,74,456) as professional fee from January 18 to April 17 this year. With bonuses and benefits, it comes to around Rs 8 crore per year.
Dravid was paid Rs 2.43 crore for the period July to December 2017, taking his annual package to around 5 crore.
During the discussion on compensation, ETPanache asked for an opinion on the evolution of Indian coaching salaries. Many Indian coaches were found to be well paid – even before the rise of the IPL.
Money in Indian cricket in the 1990s may have seemed less than it does now, but it was great at the time. The 1983 World Cup win and World Tall’s groundbreaking contract with Sachin Tendulkar and the Indian Cricket Board in the mid-90s had already cost the sport dearly. This is reflected in the coach’s salary.
Ranking The 10 Best Cricket Coaches In The World Right Now
According to a reliable source, Madan Lal, the 1983 World Cup star who coached India in 1996-7, earned Rs 5 lakh per month. During his tumultuous tenure as the Indian coach from 1999 to 2000, Kapil Dev reportedly earned Rs 4 lakh per match and a 35 percent year-end bonus. Dev and Lal did not comment when asked about their salaries.
Many former Indian players and commentators do not like it when a foreigner is appointed as a coach for big money. But the Indian coaches were also paid. Shastri, for example, earns almost three times more than Gary Kirsten, who coached India to win the 2011 World Cup and earns Rs 2.5 crore a year. John Wright, who engineered the revival of Indian cricket with Sourav Ganguly during the period 2000-2005, gets Rs 1 crore a year for his services. Greg Chappell earned Rs 1.25 crore per year as a coach from 2005 to 2007.

MUMBAI: The Board of Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Ravi Shastri as the head coach of the senior men’s national team for a two-year term ending in November 2021. The two-year contract was a direct entry in the interview process that took place in Mumbai on Friday.
A Kapil Dev-led Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which included former cricketers Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy, shortlisted three names out of six candidates who applied for the role and Shastri was the obvious choice.
Australia’s Tom Moody, New Zealand’s Mike Hesson, West Indies’ Phil Simmons and Mumbai-based coaches Lal Chand Rajput and Robin Singh are the six candidates along with Shastri after a shortlisting process by the BCCI earlier this week was.

Shastri, Hessen and Moody were the final three candidates, selected in this particular order, based on a special skill graduate score out of 100. The parameters on which these candidates were evaluated were (a) coaching philosophy, (b) coaching experience, (c) achievements in coaching (d) communication and (e) knowledge of modern coaching tools.
Former India captain Kapil Dev said the interview process took time – a whole day, in fact – because the candidates were based at different times. While Moody and Hessen conducted their respective interviews from Australia, Simmons conducted his interviews from Trinidad.
Shastri, who is currently in the Caribbean with the Indian team, preparing for the two Tests against the West Indies in Antigua and Trinidad, gave a presentation to the CAC members. Their interaction lasted for 50 minutes. About the presentation and interview process, Kapil said, “They were all excellent. I felt that Shastri has great communication skills. We scored them after listening to their presentations.
TOI understands that during Shastri’s detailed interaction with CAC members, India’s overall win percentage in the last two years – 71% was good – apart from his contribution when it comes to player management, skill development, fitness and finding his role in favor the coach. Among other things behind the revival of a good bowling attack. “It was a very detailed presentation from Ravi that also highlighted the road ahead,” the source said.

With the focus now shifting to the World Test Championship cycle, the T20 World Cup in 2020 and the T20 World Cup in 2021, Shastri has laid out a work plan for the CAC to consider, which is unanimously considered more than any another.
The CAC members also said that no comments were sought or taken into account from Indian team captain Virat Kohli or any other member of the team.
