Hours before the opening international match between India and England, in a surprise move the world’s largest cricket stadium has been named after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The 110,000-seater stadium in Motera, outside Ahmedabad in Gujarat, was a favorite project of Modi when he was the chief minister of that state before he took over as the head of the national government in 2014.
The new name was announced by President Ram Nath Kovind ahead of the third Test match between India and England.
