History Of Cricket – There is a consensus of scholarly opinion that the cricket was traced back to the Saxon or Norman period by children who lived in the Weald, an area of dense woodland and clearing in south-east England. The first mention of cricket as a game for adults was in 1611, and in the same year a dictionary defined cricket as a boy’s game. It is also thought to have come from cricket balls, with the intervention of a batsman trying to stop the ball from reaching its target.
Village cricket developed by the mid-17th century and the first English “county teams” were formed in the second half of the century, as village cricket’s “native experts” were employed as the first professionals. The first game to use team state names was in 1709.

In the first half of the 18th century, cricket established itself as a major sport in London and the southeastern counties of England. Its spread was limited by travel restrictions, but it was slowly gaining popularity in other parts of England, and women’s cricket dates back to 1745, when the first known game was played in Surrey.

In 1744, the first Laws of Cricket were written and later revised in 1774, adding innovations such as lbw, 3rd stump, – middle stump and maximum width of the bat. The codes were developed by the “Star and Garter Club” who founded the famous Marylebone Cricket Club at Lord’s in 1787. The MCC immediately became the guardian of the law and has made amendments ever since.
Rolling the ball along the ground was replaced after 1760 when bowlers began to pick up the ball, and in response to that innovation, the BAT’s old “hockey-stick” system was replaced by the straight bat. For nearly thirty years, until the formation of the MCC and the opening of Lord’s Cricket Ground in 1787, Hambledon Club in Hampshire was the center of the game.
Cricket was introduced to North America through the English colonies from the 17th century and in the 18th century it reached other parts of the world. It was introduced to the West Indies by colonialists and to India by British East India Company sailors. It arrived in Australia soon after colonization in 1788, and the game reached New Zealand and South Africa in the early years of the 19th century.
