The tourism industry in Himachal has not fully recovered from the Covid pandemic, and the last-minute change of venue has left hoteliers and local taxi operators disappointed and dismayed.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Monday that it will change the batting ground from the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association’s Dharamshala Stadium, which has been deemed unsuitable for hosting international matches. He said hoteliers have to make refunds now and there is no possibility of such a large number of bookings for at least eight days. “It’s a double whammy,” he added.

He said that although Test matches do not attract large crowds, a good crowd is expected given the popularity of Dharamsala Stadium as one of the most popular venues.

According to travel and tour operator Prem Sagar, the shifting of the venue will also result in losses for local taxi operators, who will be out of business for eight to 10 days.
