NEW DELHI: Harmanpreet Kaur will lead the Indian team in the upcoming Women’s World T20 Cup in February, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Wednesday. The Indian women’s selection committee has picked a strong 15-member squad with Smriti Mandana replacing Harmanpreet at the ICC’s premier event.
Along with the T20 World Cup squad, the board has also announced the squad for the tri-series in South Africa that will be played before the cricket extravaganza.
Veteran Shikha Pandey has also been named in the squad for the tournament. Sheeha last played for India in October 2021 before being dropped from the team. The 33-year-old, whose swing is his strength, has featured in three Tests, 55 ODIs and 56 T20s.
Jemima Rodriguez managed to retain her place in the team despite a lackluster 1-4 series as India lost to powerhouse Australia.

Left-arm spinner Anjali Sarwani was also included in the team after her debut series against Australia. Other bowling options include Renuka Thakur and Pooja Vastrakar, whose inclusion in the squad is subject to fitness.
The spinners in the team are all-rounders Diepti Sharma and Devik Vaidya apart from Radha Yadav and Rajeshwari Gayakwadi.
India are in the second group along with Pakistan, England, West Indies, Pakistan and Ireland. The two best teams from the two groups will play in the semi-finals. The final will be held on February 26, 2023 in Cape Town.
India will open the tri-series against hosts South Africa on January 19 and face the West Indies on January 23. Before the final on February 2, all teams will play each other twice.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday (Jan 6) named the 15-member squad for India’s women’s cricket team for the 2022 Women’s Cricket World Cup. Veteran Indian cricketer Mithali Raj has been named as the team’s captain and right-handed batsman. Batter Harmanpreet Kaur will be the vice-captain. Jemima Rodriguez and Sheeha Pandey are the two players who have been ruled out of the exhibition competition in New Zealand from March 4 to April 3.
