Rauf made his debut as an umpire in international cricket in 2000. Officiating 64 Tests (49 as field umpire and 15 on TV), 139 ODIs and 28 T20Is, he was one of Pakistan’s best umpires in the mid-2000s.

His family confirmed that he suffered a heart attack on Wednesday night and was taken to hospital, but there he died.

“He has not been feeling well for the last few days while running his business and came home early. Doctors say he had a heart attack,” his brother said from Lahore.

Rauf, who was also an accomplished first-class batsman and toured with the Pakistan national team without playing a Test or ODI before becoming an umpire, also officiated 11 women’s T20 matches.

“I was saddened by the news of Asad Rauf’s death. Not only was he a good judge, he also had a wonderful sense of humour. He always brought a smile to my face and will continue to do so whenever I think of him,” Ramiz Raja, the Pakistan Cricket Board chairman, said on Twitter.

T20 World Cup

Rauf, who played 71 first-class matches for the Polish National Bank and Railways before becoming a referee, was appointed to the ICC elite panel in April 2006.

Previously considered a high-ranking umpire alongside compatriot Aleem Dar, Rauf fell out of favor when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) banned him in early 2016 for his involvement in corruption and misconduct in the Indian Premier League.

Despite being banned by the BCCI in 2016, Rauf became a suspect after he was named as one of the accused by the Mumbai Police in the 2013 seat-fixing scandal.

Soon after, reports emerged that Rauf had been implicated in violating the International Cricket Council’s Anti-Corruption Code. It was also withdrawn from the Champions Cup and removed from the ICC Elite Committee.

Banning him for five years, the BCCI said he was involved in violating the ICC Anti-Corruption Code multiple times during the league while serving as a referee.

After the BCCI ban, Rauf’s officiating career came to an end as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) also imposed a ban on even domestic matches and a ban on participating in any cricket-related activities in Pakistan.

For the past few years, Rauf has been running a clothing and shoe store in Landa Bazaar in Lahore

I was screaming and yelling at the referees when I was playing, I was in agony. I was training at Middlesex, and the referee was late or ill once or twice during the team’s second game, so I went out and did it and thoroughly enjoyed it. It never crossed my mind.

David Lloyd: I always wanted to be a civil servant. I became a reserve referee because there was no place on the list. The matches I played were varsity matches and I was the judge of the best – Dickie Bird, Alan Whitehead, Lloyd Budd and Ray Julian showed me the ropes.

David Milnes: I qualified to play in the ’90s, but after my retirement I ran a marketing company. After the 2005 Ashes series, with all the euphoria and fanfare, I thought, “I want to get back into cricket.”

Michael Gove: When I first got into it, everyone thought I was crazy. They thought I was weird, that I quit acting [in 2003, at age 23], but I fell in love with it. I always dreamed I was a captain’s nightmare. I found myself square talking to the umpires and that is probably where the seed was planted.

Lloyd: Dickie [Baird] used to tell me, ‘These little boys, the students, that’s all they want to do to play county cricket, so we won’t give them up.’ My first game was very cold at the end of April. We judged in our pom pom hats and had a cup of tea during our drinks break.

Go: I loved it, it just felt natural. The day went by very quickly, though, as Peter Willey says, “Every day is a field day.”

Milnes: My first professional match was in 2006. I refereed with Tim Robinson, who was my captain at Notts in the 1980s, and I remember going out at lunchtime and thinking, “This is what I want to do.”

Gough: I was so young, just a kid really. I will always remember my first meeting with the ECB, [former referee] Barry Ledbetter approached me and he couldn’t believe it, he thought I was there on behalf of the players to address the referees! I had to appear on the field and ask where the referee’s room was, and everyone would look at me strangely and direct me to the players’ dressing room.

Gould: When I started out as a referee, I wanted to referee as well as I would like to be a referee as a player. I have never liked this principle. A modern referee, he puts his ego in the cricket bag in the morning.

Peter Willey: I tried to judge by knowing as many rules and regulations as possible to get through the game and then use common sense and talk to people. Playing Test cricket has given me some respect. Most of my games were pretty quiet because people knew I was a bitchy old bastard.

List Of Top Cricket Umpires

Milnes: I remember after the first DRS decision was overturned, I went to my colleague — Bangladeshi judge Masador Rahman — and said, “I think we all missed that day at school — the day they teach you how to be perfect.” I thought it was a great thing to remember him as an umpire. . You can’t guess. You give what you see.

Gould: I remember getting a mic for a T20 play on Sky and Dominic Cork, he wasn’t happy with the decision or something, he just moved to me knowing I was getting a hearing. Next thing in my ear is a stutter: “He’s on his way, Gunner. You better be careful…” So I thought, Damn, Bumble and I put the game down for five minutes while we were talking, and I say live on TV, “I better take care of my granddaughter.” Now from babysitter Dominic Cork!”

Willie: I was officiating a World Cup match between New Zealand and India at Centurion in South Africa in 2003 and Craig McMillan was talking to the opponents. One of them put a roll of duct tape in my pocket, and as he passed me, I pulled off a piece of tape and taped his mouth. Can you imagine it now? You will finish the assault!

Lloyd: I played a match in Taunton between Somerset and Middlesex. Ian Botham hit three balls with 12 remaining. Wayne Daniel runs into the bowl and Botham Lakes backs up to poke the pitch and ask, “Who are you supporting on this?” I politely told him to take care of him and he would take first place for six and block the next one, just to inflate the stage! Then send the last ball to the six. As he was running away, he patted my ass with a stick and said, “Hold on to me, buddy, I’ll make you famous.”

Milnes: Russell Evans and I grew up together. He was the best man at my wedding. Unfortunately, he passed away a few years ago. I remember refereeing the Yorkshire match at Scarborough for four days. Always a great trip. Ryan Sidebottom bowling alongside me, he was quite theatrical. It comes in a lot of weight, I didn’t give it away. Next ball ready for another, and again I didn’t give it was an inside advantage. Third ball in a row it has a lot of oomph I think the batting side is about 100 to 0 it was pretty high so I said ‘not out and that
