Michael Holding is set to end one of the most distinguished modern broadcasting careers when he learns to hang up his mic at the end of this season. Holding has been part of the Sky Sports commentary team for more than two decades now, a role he has held for at least as long as his career. Widely regarded as one of the game’s finest pace bowlers, Holding played 60 Tests and 102 ODIs for the West Indies from 1975 to 1987 and became an integral part of the West Indies side during that era. He began his commentary career in the Caribbean in 1988 and brought the same grace to the commentary box as he did in his playing days, an approach that earned him the nickname ‘Whispering Death’. But Holding, 66, has never shied away from expressing candid views about the game, not least in the domestic T20 leagues he doesn’t commentate on because he doesn’t think it’s cricket. Modern viewers would have seen a different side of the holding last year. Well aware that the importance of the West Indies teams he played for goes beyond the field of play, the Black Lives Matter movement following the killing of George Floyd last year became a moment when Holding’s voice was heard loudest. And clear again. His eloquent, heartfelt and personal piece for Sky cameras on racism and inequality became one of the highlights of the year’s broadcast, eventually winning two broadcasting awards in the UK. Holding won the Royal Television Society (RTS) Award for Sports Presenter, Commentator or Pundit and the channel won the award for Best Sports Programme. RTS said Holding “perfectly captured the atmosphere of the event and brought a personal perspective to a moment of immense significance” when he spoke about Floyd’s killing and the movement it sparked. That led to his critically acclaimed book, ‘Why We Kneel, How We Rise’, which deals with racism in sport this year.

Holding wasn’t afraid to show the emotion he put into that bit of programming. After the spot-fixing scandal in 2010, Pakistani fans and viewers will remember his telecast in the summer when he commented and praised the skills of Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir. It has been revealed that both of them were involved in spot fixing in the Lord’s Test. Holding in the air during one of Amir’s big no-balls, the gifted 18-year-old bowler calmed down for a moment when he spoke of his grief as he was swept away in the repair. A combination of insight, empathy and the gravitas of an illustrious career means Holding is one of those rare former players who broadcasts even when the national team he represented is not playing. He was part of the panel for England’s recent Test series against India, but had already hinted last year that he was done with his broadcasting career. I don’t see myself advancing much at my age. “I am 66 years old now, I am not 36, 46 or 56,” Holding was quoted as saying on a Press Trust of India radio talk show. Sky) I couldn’t commit to more than a year. If this year is a complete wreck, I have to think about 2021 because Sky has done me so much good. I can’t stay away from the company.” Women commentators have made a great impression and are well known from cricket. fans Check out the top 5 most popular female commentators.
