Sune Luus Appointed As South Africa’s Women’s Cricket Team Captain For West Indies Series

NEW DELHI, June 8 () – Indian women’s team captain Mithali Raj on Wednesday retired from international cricket after a 23-year career in which she established herself as the country’s best female batsman.

“Like every journey, this one must come to an end,” the 39-year-old said in a statement on social media.

Raj made her India debut as a 16-year-old in a one-dayer in 1996 against Ireland and scored 68 against South Africa in a Women’s World Cup in Christchurch in March in what turned out to be her last international outing.

Her tally of 7805 runs, including seven hundreds, from 232 matches makes her the leading run-scorer in women’s ODIs.

She also played 12 Test matches and scored 699 runs, which included a career-best 214 against England at Taunton in 2002.

“… the last 23 years have been the most fulfilling, challenging and enjoyable years of my life,” said Raj, who led India to the World Cup finals in 2005 and 2017.

“I feel now is the perfect time to call it quits as the team is in the hands of some very talented young players and the future of Indian cricket is bright.”

Born on December 23, 1992, Delany is a quality, effective shifter and is developing into an increasingly confident and influential leader. Laura took over the captaincy in April 2016 and hasn’t looked back since.

Women’s Cricket brings you the fascinating journey of this leader, her personal interest, her contributions to Irish Cricket and everything you wanted to know.

Take us down memory lane, at what age do you recognize your passion for cricket and how? When I played for the Irish under-15 team, I knew I had ambitions to go on. When I was 16 the Ireland women’s team had a home series against Nottinghamshire and I was called into the squad after a couple of late injury withdrawals. Although I did not play in the series, this first experience with the superior setup strengthened my desire to try playing at the next level.

What is it about Irish cricket that motivates you the most? The opportunity to represent my country with a group of players who are dedicated to being the best they can be and trying to take our team to a new level.

Smriti Mandhana Or Harmanpreet Kaur, Who Will Replace Mithali Raj As The New Captain Of Indian Women’s Cricket Team?

With the T20 World Cup coming up, what are the few things the team needs to work on? Consistent performances are one thing that will be crucial for us in the West Indies as we have shown in recent times how dangerous we can be with bat and ball. Fortunately, with the opening of our new High Performance Center in Dublin, we have been able to do more specific training to meet the individual needs of the players.

On a personal level, how did you prepare for the World Cup? We have all been working hard on different aspects of our games – we know we have some challenges ahead and some big achievements to make if we want to give ourselves the best chance to progress in the tournament. A lot of work has also been done with Anne Marie Kennedy, our sports psychologist, to make us feel as prepared as possible.

Who do you admire and in what way do they inspire you? Suzie Bates, specifically the way she can accelerate through the gears. He plays a very aggressive brand of cricket and has a very clear plan where he wants to score. She was very effective for New Zealand and was a very successful captain.

How has captaincy affected you as a person? The captaincy has made me a lot more dynamic and determined – I feel like I’m growing with every game and I’m getting more comfortable. There were times when I felt like I had to prove myself as a worthy captain, which probably led to a lot of self-doubt. Tactically, I still have a lot to learn, but what I’ve learned is that you can’t please or impress everyone. At the end of the day what really matters is what the other 14 players think.

Tell us something about your childhood that helped you in international cricket? I come from a sporting family – I have siblings, including a brother, who have played for Ireland in Cricket and other sports. I think I’ve always been involved with sports in different ways.

What do you think makes a team successful, recognition, retention or resilience? A clear vision that everyone accepts, respect for that vision and respect for each other. I think that drives the commitment, hard work and passion to keep going when the going gets really tough.

What do you think is still missing in women’s cricket? Professional contracts for female Irish cricketers or balancing full-time work with full-time education is not ideal. While other teams play in more tournaments and have valuable time on the field, we work at home. This in turn leads to possibly one of the biggest matches as we are faced with teams playing regular, highly competitive matches in different conditions.
