“After that incident I completely stopped cricket. I was afraid of the ball. Every time I was hit, I would see two of those bowlers running towards me,” Saeed told Al Jazeera.
But Saeed added that those who are passionate about the game have found an excuse to get involved and a way to turn the strong bond into a career in cricket – or a smaller partnership.
“Growing up, I loved listening to some commentators on Pakistani matches – Iftikhar Ahmed, Hasan Jaleel, Omer Kureishi to name a few.
“After I left the game, a friend took me to an exhibition match at FC College [in Lahore] and gave me some commentary.

“Here, I got a lot of applause. Then an illuminated national tournament was held in Lahore featuring top national cricket players. There I made some comments about the PA system and then Abdul Qadir [former Pakistani cricketer] and Imtiaz Sipra [sports writer] came to congratulate me.”
Saeed marks this event as a turning point and begins a journey that not only brings him many laurels and travels, but also gives a new life to Urdu commentary in Pakistan.
Born in Montgomery District (now known as Sahiwal District), about 112 km (70 miles) from Lahore, Saeed grew up in a culture that revolved around sports. Named after Sir Robert Montogomery during the British rule before the partition of India, the region produced many cricketers and hockey players.
“My cousin was very fond of hockey and cricket and I used to watch him play. My father used to tell me stories about Syed Mohammad Jaffer [former Indian hockey player and Olympic athlete] who was born here, and that got me interested in sports.”

Fast forward a few decades and Saeed is now one of the most popular voices among cricket fans in the country.
With Pakistan currently bereft of outstanding cricket commentators, Saeed has now rekindled the love affair with cricket enthusiasts’ Urdu commentaries.
“Before 1970, Urdu commentary on cricket matches was not common. Even on radio, it used to take five minutes. Since the 1970s, it has been given 50 percent of the airtime.
The revival of Urdu interpretation is crucial for Pakistan’s international matches. People lost him. The Pakistan Cricket Board has introduced Urdu commentary which is a good thing for the Pakistan Super League [a local T20 league with international players].

Saeed’s journey from being on the microphone at the illuminated tournament in Lahore to international matches was not easy. As an 18-year-old, she was told she was too young when she applied for an audition and the chance to be part of the popular commentary team for Radio Pakistan.
But when Saeed tried his luck again with a new producer two years later, the result was much better.
“Someone told me that the sports producer on Radio Pakistan had changed, so I thought I would meet him. The greatest radio producer of all time was Khalid Waqar. He did my auditions and so on. it’s history. He was my teacher, my mentor, and everything I learned after him, I learned from him.”

Apart from his cricket commentary, Saeed has covered local Urdu newspapers and is a correspondent for Deutsche Welle in Pakistan. He also commented on hockey matches and a Kabaddi World Cup final between India and Pakistan, which made him realize that in certain parts of the country, cricket is not the most popular sport.
But like athletes, Saeed said commentators need to look after their minds and bodies, and most importantly, their throats, which provide their bread and butter.
“I don’t drink cold water or sodas during peak season. No ice cream for me either. On match days, I drink tea before every match. I often gargle with warm water. You should take care of your throat and make sure you don’t eat anything sour or oily.
“I also make sure I don’t eat too much when commentating because it makes me sleepy which is never a good thing when you’re on the microphone. You have to be fully focused and concentrate on what’s in the middle. If you miss a ball or related events from previous rounds , the match becomes more difficult as it progresses.”

But Saeed adds that focusing only on what is happening and reporting is not enough to glue listeners and viewers together.
“If it’s a long match like tests or first-class matches, you have to create a storyboard to keep the audience interested. In Twenty20 it’s all action, so there’s neither the time nor the need for it. But in the longer format , to avoid disturbing not only the audience but also you. You have to concentrate more, like the players do.”
As Saeed celebrates the return of cricket (international matches and PSL) to Pakistan after a long drought, he remains happy with the path his life took after that eye injury.
“Almost 95 percent of the people you see connected to cricket off the field are people who once wanted to be cricketers but couldn’t fulfill their dreams. I’m happy to be one of them.”
